Gold as a call option
The heuristic (held by frank, jay-kaeppel, and a long lineage of gold advocates): gold’s payoff is convex — it bleeds premium-like losses through long chop decades (1980–2000: ~20 years to return a 1980 nominal high) and pays violently in monetary/debasement regimes (1971–79, 2001–11, 2024–26). Holding gold ≈ paying premium; the regime breaks ≈ expiry into a real move.
Frank’s refinement (see gold-call-option-filtered-levered)
The bleed is tolerable-to-profitable if the position is momentum-filtered (kill the filter during chop = stop paying premium in the chop) and the filtered exposure is levered (express the convexity with size on the trend-positive subset only). The filter converts the option analogy from “hold and bleed” to “buy the option only when it’s going to be in the money” — which is precisely absolute momentum applied to a single asset.
The live contradiction (unresolved, recorded 2026-10-08)
The same thesis about what gold is supports opposite entry engines:
- Momentum entry (Frank, this wiki’s frame): convexity means you only need to be holding during the regime breaks; a trend filter finds them.
- Contrarian/cheap entry (jay-kaeppel’s public discipline, per his Sentimentrader work): buy after multi-year lows / pessimist sentiment — because the bleed is premium, cheapen the premium by buying at the bottom of the bear.
Both can be partially right (momentum for timing, cheapness for sizing), and
the tension is testable: same asset, two entries, 1971+, compare worst-5-year
outcomes and capture of the three bull regimes. Filed rather than smoothed
over; per SCHEMA.md update policy this stays contested: true until a study
verdict.
